Does CBD help with anxiety?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent worrying or anxiety about various things that are out of proportion to their consequences or impact.  As several studies are focusing on the benefits of CBD, there has been promising data to support the hypothesis that CBD helps reduce anxiety.

Although the precise way CBD affects receptors in the brain is not fully understood, research data shows it influences serotonin pathways. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter most commonly associated with mental health, specifically depression and anxiety. Low levels are found with people diagnosed with either disorder. In an animal study done by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) they found CBD reduced stress. The CBD helped minimize the physiological symptoms of anxiety resulting in lower heart rates and decreased stress behaviors.

Dosage also plays a significant role. A study by the Journal of Clinical Medicine Research published in 2020 found that doses of 400mg, 600mg and 900mg decreased anxiety. In many of these studies they are utilizing higher levels of CBD than can be found in many commercially available products.

CBD may offer an alternative to traditional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescriptions. While CBD is by no means a “cure” it can be an excellent aid for someone to manage their condition and its symptoms. A doctor should always be consulted prior to making any changes in a prescription regimen. Keep in mind, CBD may interact with certain medications or supplements as it can interfere with vital drug metabolism enzymes. Also, depending on your state of residence, CBD products may be easily accessible or you may require a license from your doctor to acquire CBD oil. Research what may be best for you and consult with a physician before purchasing or taking anything outside of your normal treatment plans.
